Sports Injury Care & Management - Dr. Sanjiv Guardian Hospital

Overview

Sports injuries are physical injuries that occur to athletes and individuals participating in sporting events, indoor or outdoor games, or regular exercise. In many cases, these types of injuries result from the overuse of a specific body part, accidents, inadequate training, improper use of protective gear, or insufficient warm-up and stretching exercises.

At Dr. Sanjiv Guardian Hospital, our expert medical team provides comprehensive evaluation, immediate management, and advanced rehabilitation for all types of sports-related conditions, helping athletes and active individuals safely return to peak performance.

Common Sports Injuries

  • Sprains and Strains: Damage to ligaments (sprains) or muscles/tendons (strains) due to sudden twisting or stretching.

  • Fractures: Breaks or cracks in the bone resulting from high-impact trauma or repetitive stress.

  • Dislocations: Displacement of bones forming a joint, common in contact sports.

  • Specific Joint Impacts: Frequent issues affecting foot and ankle, shoulder, hip, and knee regions.

Immediate First-Aid: The RICE Protocol

For acute injuries, the most common immediate treatment recommended is the RICE method:

  • Rest: Avoid activities that cause pain or may worsen the injury.

  • Ice: Apply cold packs wrapped in a towel to the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes, four times a day, to diminish swelling and pain. (Never place ice directly on the skin).

  • Compression: Use elastic wraps, air casts, or splints to help reduce swelling.

  • Elevation: Raise the injured part above heart level to minimize fluid accumulation and lower pain.

Prevention & Safety Measures

To minimize the risk of sports-related injuries, follow these essential guidelines:

  • Conditioning: Follow a balanced exercise program to strengthen muscles and gradually increase intensity without overdoing it.

  • Proper Gear: Wear well-fitted protective equipment (such as guards, pads, helmets, and proper athletic shoes) and comfortable clothing.

  • Warm-Up & Cool-Down: Always perform warm-up exercises to stretch muscles and increase flexibility before playing, and cool down afterward.

  • Smart Habits: Avoid exercising immediately after a large heavy meal, maintain a nourishing healthy diet, and never play through severe fatigue or existing injuries.

  • Rules & Fitness: Learn the correct rules of the game and ensure proper physical fitness before active participation.
